Food Sensitivities vs. Food Allergies: Which Do You Have?




Different people can have radically different reactions to a certain food, and while food allergies are quite rare, many more people are developing food sensitivities.

According to experts, at least 30% of us will experience some kind of food sensitivity in our lifetimes, which means it is important to keep an eye out for such episodes so we can prevent them in the future. Food sensitivities can cause reactions so varied they are not always recognized for what they are, so making a note of patterns will help you to identify your own sensitivities, if you have any.

An immediate and dramatic reaction such as throat swelling, burning or itching, rashes or other obvious signs of distress can identify a food allergy which has triggered an immune response and can be fatal if the individual is severely allergic and goes into anaphylactic shock and is not helped. This has been seen in people allergic to peanuts and peanut products, for example.

While food sensitivities or intolerances seem to be less serious than actual food allergies, they can actually trigger a host of other health challenges. Regular reactions from intolerances, such as gas, bloating, migraines, fatigue and soreness can contribute to chronic health issues if left unchecked. According to Healthy Living magazine, some studies are beginning to associate food sensitivities to increased severity of symptoms in conditions such as arthritis and asthma. If we regularly consume things which our bodies fight, we keep our systems in distress, which cannot lead to optimum health. A host of processes occur when we consume what our bodies consider to be toxins, and we are only beginning to understand the consequences in terms of the complexity and interconnectedness of our bodies' systems.

Common food sensitivities and their symptoms include:

Lactose intolerance: gas, bloating, abdominal pain or discomfort, diarrhea

Spicy foods: runny nose, sweating, sometimes sneezing

Beans or other legumes, cruciferous vegetables: gas, bloating

Alcohol, red wine, sulphites: headache, fogginess, temporarily stained teeth and gums (red wine)

Should you experience regular and painful reactions to certain foods, be sure and check with a physician, because these can be signs of more serious issues such as Crohn's disease, Celiac Disease or other intestine and/or bowel problems.

Some of the more common foods people have actual allergic reactions to include fish and shellfish, peanuts and other tree nuts, wheat, soy, oranges, strawberries, spinach, corn, tomatoes, and animal products such as beef, chicken, pork, eggs and dairy. Some reactions can be attributed to growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals in certain foods, but again you should always check with your doctor to ensure you are not developing anything which might challenge your health in the future. Also, you may wish to try buying and eating organic produce to see if you have the same reactions.

That's correct folks. Your weight is not that important. Your body fat percentage is. What is body fat percentage? This is part of the composition of your body. Your body is composed of muscle and bones etc which makes up your lean body mass. Your body then has fat. The percentage of your total mass which is pure fat is called your body fat percentage.

Most people when they start a fat burning weight loss regime tend to concentrate on a goal weight. They focus on getting to this weight and don't realise that body composition is much more important.

Your body fat percentage is a much better indicator of your health. There are different recommendations for body fat percentage levels, but the following come from the American Council on Exercise.

Body Fat Percentages

An example of how body fat percentage is a much better indicator of health rather than something like BMI would be "fat skinny" people.

Say I am a woman who weighs 70kg and I am 168cm tall. My BMI of 24.4 tells me that I am in a normal weight range. I then go and measure my body fat percentage and the percentage of my body which is pure fat is 33%. This shows I am actually at risk. I have too much fat compared with lean mass on my body and so I am actually at risk even though BMI tells me I am normal weight range.

The same can go the other way say I am a male body builder who is 193cm tall and weighs 115kg. Of course this weight is muscle! My BMI would tell me that I am obese and yet when I do my body fat percentage testing I have a percentage of 8%. This actually means I am in the athlete class and not at all obese.

Focusing on body fat percentage rather than total mass is a much better option when setting goals. It is a much better indication on where you are health wise. The other reason is that muscle weighs more than fat and so sometimes when you build more lean mass you will see a gain on the scales which is actually good because it means your body fat percentage has dropped and you are healthier and leaner. Your muscles just weigh more!

 Kadangkala karena suatu sebab,pernikahan tidak bisa dipertahankan lagi,sehingga perceraian menjadi pilihan yang tak terelakan lagi.
namun mengingat dampak perceraian bagi anak kita,seyogyanya kita berfikir berulang kali sebelum mengambil keputusan Bercerai.

Dalam setiap perceraian,anaklah yang menjadi korban utamanya,terutama bila perceraian terjadi saat anak masih dalam usia yang sangat belia,dimana secara emosional mereka masih sangat labil.
menurut Dra.clara Istiwidarum Kriswanto,MA ''efek negatif perceaian pada anak-anak bisa berbeda-beda,tergantung banyak faktor,seperti usia anak,jenis kelamin,kematangan kepribadian,kesehatan kejiwaannya serta ada tidaknya dukungan dari orang dewasa di sekitarnya. ( Tabloid Nova ).


Perceraian orang tua sering mengakibatkan anak-anak mengalami perasaan:

- sedih
- Tidak aman ( insecurity)
- Tidak diingini atau ditolak orang tuanya yang tidak mengasuhnya.
- Kesepian
- Marah
- Merasa kehilangan
- perasaan bersalah dan menyalahkan diri sendiri ( quilty feeling).



Dan perasaan-perasaan tersebut sering di manifestasikan dalam perilaku :

- Bersikap kasar,suka mengamuk dan bertindak agresif
- Menjadikan dirinya pendiam,murung dan menutup diri dari pergaulan
- sulit berkonsentrasi dan minat belajar/bersekolah menurun sehingga mempengaruhi
prestasinya
- Suka melamun dan sering berkhayal kedua orang tuanya akan bersatu kembali

Karenanya,jika memang perceraian harus terjadi,sedapat mungkin akibat psikologi pada anak harus kita minimalkan dengan cara :

*. Ajak anak berdiskusi
orang tua ( kedua belah pihak ) sebaiknya memberikan kesempatan kepada anak agar dia mau mengungkapkan isi hatinya dan beban pikirannya. Setidaknya,dengan mengungkapkan isi hatinya anak merasa diperhatikan dan meringankan beban perasaan dia.
*. Yakinkan Si kecil
Pastikan untuk selalu mendampingi si kecil,jikapun tidak bisa tetap jaga komunikasi dengannya.karena dengan cara itu dia tidak akan merasa ditinggalkan.
*. Jaga perasaan anak
Pastikan untuk tidak pernah ribut/bertengkar didepan anak,dengan begitu anak akan terjaga perasaannya dan lebih tenang hatinya.
*. Jangan melibatkan anak
pertengkaran di depan anak dan menjelek-jelekkan pasangan didepan anak secara langsung mengundang anak untuk terlibat di dalam masalah kita,ini harus dihindari betul.tunjukkan pada anak bahwa kita dan pasangan merupakan orang tua yang selalu mendukung meski tidak bersama.
*. Pastikan masa transisi berjalan aman
Pada awal perceraian anak akan sulit menerima kenyataan bahwa kedua orang tuanya tidak bersama lagi, bahkan ada banyak anak memerlukan waktu bertahun-tahun untuk melewati masa transisi ini,indikator anak yang telah beradaptasi adalah dia menyadari dan mengerti bahwa kedua orang tuanya tidak lagi bersama dan dia tidak berangan-angan/berfantasi kedua orang tuanya akan bersatu kembali,dapat menerima rasa kehilangan,tidak marah dan meyalahkan orangtuanya ataupun diri sendiri,serta bisa menjadi dirinya sendiri kembali.
akan tetapi bagi anak yang gagal beradaptasi,ia akan membawanya sampai dewasa perasaan ditolak,diri tidak berharga dan merasa tidak dicintai.yang akan membuatnya bermasalah dalam menjalin hubungan dengan orang lain dan lawan jenisnya nanti.
semoga sebelum terjadi perceraian, kita mau berfikir secara matang.

KB SECARA ALAMI.


      Metode KB alami adalah suatu cara untuk mencegah kehamilan secara alamiah dengan cara berpantang untuk melakukan hubungan suami istri selama masa subur.
      Metode ini antara lain:
    • Metode Kalender: dengan menghitung masa subur berdasarkan perhitungan kalender.
 Perhitungan ini mempunyai keakuratan hanya sekitar 60%, karena sangat dipengaruhi oleh keteratuaran siklus haid.rumus perhitungan ini adalah Masa subur = hari terakhir menstruasi + 13. sebagai contoh, jika seorang wanita mendapati siklus haid hari pertamanya pada tanggal 1 maka masa suburnya adalah hari ke 12 sampai ke 16
    • Metode suhu basal: suhu basal adalah suhu badan asli.Suhu basal wanita lebih tinggi setelah terjadi ovulasi daripada sebelum masa ovulasi.Bila suhu basal tubuh lebih tinggi 3 hari berturut-turut daripada 6 hari sebelumnya maka masa subur telah berakhir.
    • Metode pengamatan lendir: Bila di sekitar alat kelamin terasa basah memasuki masa subur dan bila terasa kering maka memasuki masa tidak subur
    • Metode Keefe: Wanita meraba sendiri leher rahim dengan memasukan 2 jari ke vagina.Akan terjadi perbedaan pada leher rahim waktu masa subur dan masa tidak subur.
    • Metode Simpto-termal: Metode yang mengabungkan metode pengamatan lendir dan metode Keefe
    • Metode menyusui tanpa haid: khusus digunakan untuk menunda kehamilan selama 6 bulan setelah melahirkan dengan memberikan ASI eksklusif
    •  

Metode KB Buatan

  • Alat kontrasepsi mekanis terdiri dari kondom dan diafragma.Kondom merupakan sarung untuk alat kelamin pria sedangkan diafragma digunakan oleh wanita berupa katert berbentuk seperti topi.
  • Alat kontrasepsi Kimiawi: Contohnya adalah spermisidal yaitu bahan atau zat kimiawi yang digunakan untuk membunuh sperma seperti tablet busa,krim jelly dan tisu KB
  • Alat kontrasepsi hormonal: terdiri dari Pil KB,Suntikan KB dan Susuk KB
  • Alat kontrasepsi dalam rahim: IUD atau spiral
  • Alat kontrasepsi Mantap: Tubektomi adalah pencegahan kehamilan dengan memotong atau mengikat kedua saluran telur pada wanita sedangkan vasektomi adalah mengikat atau memotong saluran mani pada pria

Sering terlontar pertanyaan dari ibu-ibu yang sedang hamil / menyusui,bolehkah puasa?. para ulama dan imam madzab membolehkan wanita hamil dan atau sedang menyusui untuk tidak berpuasa,berdasarkan hadist riwayat Anas bin Malik Al-Ka’by radhiallahu’anhu, sesungguhnya Rasululah sallallahu’alaihi wasallam bersabda:
"Sesungguhnya Allah menggugurkan puasa dan setengah shalat bagi musafir. Dan Dia juga menggugurkan (kewajiban berpuasa saat itu juga) bagi wanita hamil atau menyusui."
gugurnya kewajiban ini dengan mengantikannya di waktu lain atau membayarkan fidyah.

Namun,bila anda tetap berkeinginan untuk puasa hal tersebut sah-sah saja sehingga boleh dilakukan
malah banyak yang berpendapat puasa membikin ibu lebih sehat dan tidak membahayakan janin ataupun bayi yang sedang disusui.

*. Persiapkan mental dan hindari stres.
dan segeralah berbuka bila :
*. Muntah
Muntah bisa menyebabkan dehidrasi dan tubuh kekurangan asupan makanan.
*. Lemas.
bisa jadi anda kekurangan asupan makanan/kekurangan cairan dan hipoglikemia.
*. Pusing,mata berkunang-kunang dan keringat berlebih.
ini menjadi tanda anda tidak kuat meneruskan puasa,segeralah berbuka.
*. Diare.
Diare adalah penyebab dihidrasi dengan cepat.
*. Mimisan.
bisa terjadi karena tekanan di otak yang meningkat sehingga ada pembuluh darah yang pecah,ini sebagai tanda kondisi tubuh tidak stabil.
*.anda mengalami kondisi yang menurut anda bisa membahayakan diri anda dan janin/bayi
anda.

Sebaiknya jangan berpuasa jika :
*.Anda menderita diabetes (DM). puasa membuat gula darah anda tidak terkontrol dengan baik.
*.Hipertensi/tekanan darah tinggi.
ingat !,anda harus benar-benar menjaga tekanan darah anda biar stabil.
*. Gangguan sistim pencernakan.

Puasa Untuk Anak

Hai orang-orang yang beriman, diwajibkan bagimu berpuasa, sebagaimana telah diwajibkan pada orang-orang sebelum kamu. Agar kamu bertakwa” (Al Baqarah:183).

Pendidikan agama sebaiknya diberikan sejak dini kepada anak,untuk menanamkan keimanan kepada anak sebagai bekal kehidupannya ketika dewasa nantinya.
keimanan sebagai bentuk kecerdasan spiritual sangatlah penting untuk membangun hidup yang lebih berkualitas.

Dan puasa dibulan ramadhan ini kiranya bisa menjadi wahana anak untuk memupuk keimanannya,untuk itu orang tua harus megajarkan dan melatih anak-anaknya untuk berpuasa.
tapi tentunya harus disesuaikan dengan kemampuan dan kemauan anak,sehingga puasa bukan merupakan "siksaan" bagi anak.
untuk itu peran orang tua sangat besar dan menentukan,orang tua tidak cukup membekali dirinya dengan pengalaman saja tetapi harus juga mengetahui tahap perkembangan keagamaan pada anak.

tapi sebenarnya apa sih manfaat puasa pada anak-anak?.

puasa memberikan manfaat bagi kesehatan fisik dan psikis.

bagi fisik diantaranya:
*).puasa memberikan kesehatan secara menyeluruh ( holistik).

*).Puasa membantu tubuh membuang sel-sel yang telah rusak / mati dan membantu proses pembuangan racun dalam tubuh.

*).produksi tubuh akan asam lambung dan enzim pun akan menjadi normal dan teratur.

Bagi psikis :
*).anak menjadi terbiasa untuk taat terhadap ajaran agamanya.

*).Anak menjadi lebih kreatif.
dengan berpuasa anak akan menemukan cara-cara atau tindakan untuk mengurangi kecemasan mereka terhadap keinginan untuk makan dan minum.

Puasa melatih anak mengendalikan diri dari dorongan untuk memuaskan keinginannya. seperti kita tau bahwa anak cenderung ingin serba ada dan segera.

Dengan terbiasa menahan diri menjadikan anak tidak mudah marah dan tersinggung.

*).Anak menjadi lebih peka perasaannya.
dengan merasakan haus dan lapar,anak menjadi lebih memahami dan empati terhadap orang-orang sekitarnya yang kurang beruntung untuk bisa makan 3 kali sehari.
